Is there a link between a low carb diet and diabetes? Carbs are a great source of energy for the body. When we eat carbs, they are broken down into glucose, the source of energy for the body.

Once glucose enters the bloodstream, it causes a rise in blood sugar levels. This results in the release of a hormone called insulin, which promotes the transfer of the glucose into the cells for metabolizing or storage. The quick insulin response minimizes the spikes in blood sugar levels, which can be harmful.

However… some people have a condition called insulin resistance, in which the body produces insulin but does not use it effectively. People with insulin resistance have high blood glucose levels because the glucose accumulates in the blood instead of being absorbed by the cells. This can lead to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

The number of people afflicted with diabetes today is becoming increasingly higher. According to the WHO, that number was 366 million people worldwide in 2011.

The solution to this problem is actually quite simple — go low carb. By reducing the intake of carbohydrates, blood glucose and insulin levels will go way down and you’ll have no need for all of that insulin.

Low carb diets are believed to be the best choice of diet to prevent or control diabetes. Therefore a low carb diet and diabetes are linked, and a low carb diet could be beneficial for people living with diabetes.

  • A low carb diet can reduce the risk of certain complications associated with diabetes, such as heart disease, kidney, eye and foot damage, and skin conditions by lowering the blood glucose levels. Controlling blood glucose levels through a low carb diet can help prevent these complications.
  • Following a low carb diet can reduce the need for diabetic medications by reducing blood sugar and insulin levels, improving insulin resistance and promoting weight loss.

The best way to control or prevent type 2 diabetes and the complications associated with it is to be aware of the foods we consume. Reducing the intake of carbohydrates will result in lower blood glucose and insulin levels.

If however, you’re taking medication for diabetes, it’s advisable to talk to your physician prior to starting a low carb diet as changes may have to be made to your dosage in order to prevent your blood sugar levels from going too low — a condition known as hypoglycemia.

A low carb diet is definitely a great option for people living with diabetes to assist in lowering and maintaining the balance of their blood sugar levels.
